Show your pet you care with an imaginative gift

The old adage that a dog is a man’s best friend remains true in modern times as pets of all kinds are now being treated more as one of the family.

One of the easiest ways to include a pet in a home is to give it the same sorts of treats as the human members of the household. Celebrating a dog’s birthday, for instance, can make him feel special and gives you a great reason to spend the whole day spoiling him. Nowadays, stores cater for such occasions with special birthday cakes as well as edible greeting cards. Cats will prefer a slightly different treat and kitty caviar is available from premium pet shops.

Clothes and canines are becoming more and more popular. Although some celebrities may buy dogs purely as a fashion accessory, many dogs are now being dressed to impress. Specialists sell everything a dog could wish for – from a fancy collar, to jewellery, to dresses – meaning dog owners now have the option to turn their pets into fashionistas.

Rather than buying an extravagant luxury, your pet may appreciate a less lavish gift that will give long term benefits. Does your dog have a comfortable bed? Is your cat flap in need of an upgrade? Would your bird like a larger cage to fly about in? Whilst these gifts may not show an immediate change in your pet, over the next few weeks and months you should hopefully notice that he seems happier as he makes use of his new environment.

If you adopted your pet, you may not know its actual date of birth. If this is the case, rather than celebrating its birthday, you could always use National Dog Day – 26 August – as the day for spoiling your pet. Other animals celebrate their dedicated days on different dates – cats on 29 October and birds on 5 January.

Although not as entertaining as giving toys or presents, buying pet insurance is a very practical gift to give and shows that you care. Most policies will provide cover for expenses incurred if your pet ever needs to visit the vet – something that can be very costly if your animal ever needs major or lengthy treatment.

Of course, with the best presents it is always the thought that counts. Sometimes the best thing to give is something simple – a dog will always appreciate a walk in the park and a stick to chase – and splashing out is not always necessary.

Ensure your pet has the best possible protection

According to research, there are 27 million pets in the UK today, with over 40 percent of households owning at least one domesticated animal. Dogs and cats account for the largest percentage, with British people owning over 7.3 million canines and more than 7.2 million felines.

Companionship is cited as the primary purchase incentive, with the report suggesting that 60 percent of people in the UK buy pets for that reason. The study also found that just five percent of people buy pets for security purposes, underlining the belief that pets are viewed more as friends or family members, than just merely animals.

And, with the old adage purporting the fact that a dog is a man’s best friend, as well as studies claiming that pet ownership can help stave off such health risks as high blood pressure, it is little wonder that owning a pet has become entrenched in modern society.

Indeed, just looking at the pampering options available for pets today – grooming parlours, pet hotels and pet care products, for example – it is easy to recognise the integrated role they can achieve in the family and the high regard in which they are held.

Pet welfare is, to most owners, of utmost importance, and when a pet becomes sick, it’s almost as distressing as discovering a child or close relative is ill. Pets can live for a long time and the attachment that people form is akin to human relationships. Therefore, most owners are aware of the need for a good vet, coupled with a reliable pet insurance policy.

Unlike the National Health Service for humans, pet owners will also know there is no such thing as a National Pet Service and consequently when a pet becomes ill, many face extortionate veterinary bills, which, dependent on the treatment can run into hundreds, or even thousands, of pounds.

That’s why, if you own a pet, it is a sensible idea to take out the proper insurance. With the right policy, you can ensure your pet is covered for any number of health matters, thus preventing, as far as possible, the possibility of your pet becoming seriously ill. For example, you could be insured for up to £5,000 per condition for your pet.

It may also be possible, if for instance you have to go into hospital, and there is no-one to look after your pet, to get assistance toward pet boarding fees. In this way, you can have peace of mind that your pet is being cared for and that its welfare is not going to suffer because you cannot be there.

There are a vast number of insurance policies on the market and it is vital to ensure you choose the most appropriate one for your pet. It can be wise to conduct research into the different options available and choose the most appropriate pet insurance quote on the market.

In this way, you are helping to give your pet the best possible protection against illness.

Selecting The Right Bird Cage

Pets are the greatest friends that a human being can have, offering a great way to pass time for their owners. According to the recent surveys, it has been proved that having a pet improves the general quality of health and life in general for the owner. Like many small animals such as ferrets, rats and chinchillas, birds are kept as beloved pets too, with a lot many preferring these feathered friends as pets because of low costs and cleaner environments. Also, having birds as pets can enhance the grandeur of a house. However giving a bird its own private space is a must to keep them happy. So if you want to keep your ‘winged friends’ happy, buying from the variety of bird cages is crucial.

There are various models, colors and sizes of bird cages available in the pet shops and many of the amateur owners might have a hard time choosing the perfect cage. So here are some bird cage selection tips that would make you and your bird happy:

Size of the Cage: Large birds such as Amazons, conures, cockatoos or African grays require large bird cages. These cages have bars that are positioned horizontally and not vertically. Such design helps the birds to climb and exercise within the cage. The smaller birds such as canaries, parakeets, parrots and finches do well in the smaller or the parrot cages. The doors for all the cages should be large so that the birds can get access easily. There should also be food and water containers within the cage that can be filled from the outside. The bird cages should also be easy to clean to maintain a hygienic environment.

Shape and Style of the Cage: This is one of the most vital considerations to be made before buying a bird cage. Recent studies have revealed that round bird cages effect the psychological health of the birds adversely. They cram the birds for room and thus they are not allowed free movement. In time the psychological problem grows into a physical health hazard. When buying a cage angled ones should be chosen over the rest of the others.

Location of the cage: Normally people like to keep the birds within the confines of a room. But it has to be understood that the bird will be happier in a natural habitat. So if you want to keep it within the room then makes sure that it gets enough exposure to light and heat in desired proportions. The location has to be chosen very judiciously. The cages can be hung or placed on a stand as per the requirement of the owners. There are bird cages available in all styles and shapes. There are wooden cages, stainless steel bird cages and many other varieties available in the market.

Some important questions to ask: You should examine the craftsmanship of bird cages carefully before buying. Examine each and every component of the cage from its structure to size carefully. Here are a few important questions that should be asked:

• Is the cage solid and well built?
• Are there any open ends or sharp edges?
• Is the cage made of stainless steel that will not chip?
• Is the bird-cage easy to clean and non-toxic?

The health and life-span of the bird depends on how clean and ideal its cage is. Hence it is important to pay attention to the even the minutest of details before buying a bird cage.
